FAQs
Do you charge for proofs?
Standard PDF proofs are free of charge. If you would like a printed proof, we can tailor it to what matters most to you, whether that is checking the paper stock, colour accuracy or finish. A charge will apply for printed proofs.
What file types do you accept for artwork?
Our preferred format is a high-resolution, print-ready PDF.
We can also work with:
– Vector files: Ai (Adobe Illustrator), EPS, SVG
– Page-layout files: InDesign (.indd, .idml)
– Raster images: TIFF, JPEG, PNG, PSD (Photoshop)
– Office files: Word, Excel, PowerPoint — while these are not print-ready, our in-house studio can usually convert them into print-ready artwork
For best results, please:
– Include the correct bleed for your product (typically 3 mm for small format, 10–25 mm for large format)
– Outline or embed all fonts, and supply any linked files if providing Illustrator or InDesign packages
What are your standard delivery times?
Delivery times depend on the product type, quantity and whether items are in stock.
Stock items can often be dispatched the same or next working day. Bespoke products typically take around 7–10 working days from proof approval, while more specialist items such as lenticular prints or integrated label forms can take 3–4 weeks. If you have a fixed deadline, let us know and we will recommend the best production and delivery options.
Do you offer samples?
Yes. We can provide samples of materials, finishes or printed examples so you can check the quality before committing to a full order. Samples can be tailored to your needs, and charges may apply depending on what you require.
What print finishes are available?
We offer a wide range of finishes to suit your design and intended use, including:
- Gloss, matt and satin coatings
- Aqueous and UV coatings
- Lamination options: gloss, matt, soft-touch, dry-wipe matt and anti-scuff matt (ideal for large format)
- Encapsulation
- Foil blocking — traditional and digital methods
- Embossing and debossing
- Spot UV — traditional and digital methods
- Thermography
- Scratch-off latex
Availability depends on the product type, and we can advise on the best finish to achieve the look and feel you want.
Can I request bespoke or custom sizes?
Yes. We can produce to almost any dimensions beyond standard sizes, whether you need small-run specialist items or large-scale formats. Just share your specifications when requesting a quote, and we will confirm the most cost-effective way to produce them.
What’s the best way to supply artwork?
The best way is as a high-resolution, print-ready PDF. We can also work from native design files such as InDesign packages, as long as all fonts are outlined or embedded and any linked files are included.
Files up to 10 MB can be emailed to us. For larger files, we recommend using a file transfer service such as WeTransfer.
Can you help make my supplied artwork print-ready?
Yes. If you provide your files along with any linked images and fonts, our studio can prepare them for print — including setting the correct resolution and colour settings. We will always advise if an image is too low in quality to reproduce well, as it is not possible to improve the sharpness of low-resolution images.
Can you amend existing artwork files?
Yes. Our studio works in Adobe Creative Suite, giving us full control over edits to images, graphics and text in professional design formats. We can also work from files created in other platforms such as Canva or Sora, although these may take longer to amend due to the way the graphics are produced. For the quickest turnaround, supplying original design files with fonts and linked images is best.
What if I only have a concept or a brief but no design file?
That’s absolutely fine. Our in-house design team can work from your ideas or brief to create the finished artwork, or develop concepts and visuals from scratch if you have no existing branding. We will share proofs for your approval before handling the printing and fulfilment, giving you a complete service from start to finish.
What file resolution do you require for images?
For most print work, we recommend 300 dpi at the final print size to achieve crisp, high-quality results. For very large format graphics viewed from a distance, a lower resolution may be suitable. All artwork is run through our pre-flight protocol, which flags any images under 150 dpi for review before printing.
What if I approve a proof and later spot an error?
There is only a small window between approving artwork and production starting, so it’s important to check proofs carefully. If your job has not yet gone to print, we can make changes at no extra cost. Once production has begun, any corrections and reprints will be chargeable. Our proofing process is designed to help you catch any issues before you give final approval.
Which courier do you use?
Our preferred courier is DPD, who provide one-hour delivery windows, excellent service levels and carbon-neutral deliveries that align with our own sustainability ethos. We also use a multi-carrier solution to give flexibility and choice. For local deliveries within 20 miles of Birch HQ, we use our own van. For palletised goods, we work with reliable partners offering same-day or overnight services. You are also welcome to visit us and collect your order during normal working hours.
What are your standard payment terms?
For initial orders, payment is required on a pro forma basis, with terms for future orders to be agreed with our accounts team. Typically, this would be within 30 days of the invoice date.
Can I track my job progress or visit during production?
We keep you updated at key stages — confirming expected completion dates when you approve your proof, and again when your order is despatched. For certain projects, we can also arrange a press pass so you can see your job being printed. As our production partners are based across the country and schedule their own press time, visits depend on the factory location, availability and the type of job being produced.
